Billy Adams, a Tampa rapper known as “Ace NH,” was convicted in September of murdering 22-year-old Alana Sims and her unborn child. Now he has sent a handwritten letter to Judge Mark Wolfe asking to waive mitigation and be sentenced according to the jury’s vote, writing that he has no issue with the death penalty and wants his wishes on the record. A jury recommended life in prison, but Adams is asking for something different.
Sims was five months pregnant when she was found dead on a street in February 2023. Her 1-year-old son was discovered unharmed, sleeping in an SUV beside her. The case has raised difficult questions about self-requested death sentences, the limits of a defendant’s wishes, and how much discretion a judge should exercise when a jury has already spoken.
The sentencing hearing is scheduled for Dec. 1, when Judge Wolfe will make the final decision. Whatever he rules, one thing is certain: a young mother is gone and a little boy will grow up without her. What do you think justice looks like in this case?
