A dispute over Wi-Fi is at the center of a double homicide case in Lufkin, Texas, where 47-year-old Jeremiah McGee was arrested Friday and charged with capital murder. Police say McGee lived in a duplex on Third Street beside Maria Davalos, 62, and her son Ariel Arellano Jr. The investigation began October 23 after the victims’ son and brother called 911, and officers arrived to find both family members fatally wounded by gunfire.

According to investigators, multiple people they interviewed, including McGee, described ongoing disputes over the Wi-Fi between the two households. Police say they continued working the case until they had enough evidence to obtain an arrest warrant and a second search warrant of McGee’s home.

For those of us living in close quarters along the Suncoast, the story raises uncomfortable questions about how everyday neighbor conflicts get handled. Sharing a wall, a breezeway, or an internet connection is routine here, and so are the small annoyances that come with it. What made this case so different is where those annoyances ended up.
