A social media influencer’s decision to publicly accuse her estranged husband of pedophilia has ended in tragedy. Sara Gilson, 43, was fatally shot by Jeremiah Duffey on July 23, just 12 days after she posted a TikTok video about the allegations. Police responded to a domestic violence call late that night and found both dead from gunshot wounds in an apparent murder-suicide. Gilson’s young son called 911 and was taken into protective custody before being released to a parent.
The case has sparked a painful conversation about the limits of online activism and the failure of protective systems. Gilson had been granted a protective order against Duffey on June 10. At the time of the killing, Duffey was also under investigation for allegedly inappropriately touching a juvenile basketball player he coached. Despite these legal actions, Gilson was not safe. Her final TikTok post was a darkly prescient joke about Netflix making a documentary about her ex-husband.
