Sarasota County schools welcome students back next week, and one brand new nonprofit is working behind the scenes to make sure no kid starts the year without the basics. Turtles for Tomorrow, founded by Casey Barrett, is taking a fresh approach to the annual school supply scramble. Instead of collecting bags of pencils and notebooks for families to pick up at a central location, the group is partnering directly with schools to get those supplies into classrooms before the first bell rings.
The group’s first project is a partnership with Fruitville Elementary’s PTO. Barrett says traditional supply drives create real barriers for families, including transportation challenges, work schedule conflicts, and the simple discomfort of having to line up for help. By working with the school to forecast demand and purchase supplies in bulk, Turtles for Tomorrow removes those hurdles entirely. The name is a nod to the loggerhead sea turtles that nest along our Gulf beaches, creatures that need a clear path from their nests to the water. The nonprofit’s mission is similar: clearing the path for students so they can focus on learning, not on whether they have a folder.
The organization is volunteer-led and plans to expand beyond Fruitville Elementary in the coming months.
