Holiday costs creep past gifts and groceries into travel, decorations, and hosting, and plenty of Suncoast households are turning to AI chatbots for help sorting it all out. Cherry Dale, vice president of financial education at Virginia Credit Union, has one rule before you open that tool: write down every November and December expense first. Travel, food, gifts, decorations, hosting. Get it on paper, then let the chatbot organize it.
The safety piece matters just as much. Never enter names, banking details, or account information into an AI chat. You don’t need to. Generic prompts do the work. Ask for a budget for hosting eight people at Thanksgiving and you’ll get an approximate cost per person, menu ideas, and a grocery list. Ask for gift ideas under ten dollars that are simple to make, and you’ll get specific suggestions that stay inside the line.
Dale also points out that experiences and gifts of time stretch a budget further than store-bought items, which lands well here in Sarasota and Manatee County, where a day at the Ringling or an afternoon on the water can beat anything wrapped in a box. What’s the holiday expense that always catches you off guard? Let us know.
