Viral TSA Breast Milk Story Changed the Rules for Traveling Families

A 2022 viral moment at a TSA checkpoint is back in the spotlight thanks to InvestigateTV+, and it’s a story plenty of Suncoast families will recognize. Emily Calandrelli, author and former host of Netflix’s “Emily’s Wonder Lab,” was on her first trip away from her 10-week-old son when agents refused her ice packs because they weren’t frozen solid and asked where her baby was. She was escorted out of the security line and forced to check the ice packs. Her post about the experience spread fast, and the complaints that followed helped drive national changes for families flying with breast milk.

The episode doesn’t stop there. It also follows a 61-year-old woman managing early-onset dementia and the daily work of keeping medications straight, a fisherman named John who spent $13 on coangler.com to build an app for anglers who don’t want to fish alone, and a Vermont bird rehabilitator whose family grew up thinking every kitchen has an owl.

If you’re flying out of SRQ or Tampa this season with a pump, or you’re a grandparent traveling to meet a new grandbaby, it’s worth brushing up on what’s allowed at the checkpoint.
