Three children in Jackson County, West Virginia, spent years describing what investigators now say was prolonged and severe abuse at the hands of a couple charged in the case. Erica Lynn Sayre and Clifford Gale Sayre face multiple counts of child abuse and neglect after the children detailed beatings, strangulation, food and water deprivation, and punishment that included soiled cat litter in their beds and forced barefoot runs on a gravel driveway, according to the Suncoast News Network report. Sheriff RH Mellinger called the environment a “house of horrors.”

Deputies say one child was struck in the head with an electronic device and denied medical treatment while bleeding, and another reported that Clifford Sayre physically restrained her while Erica Sayre cut her hair with a razor blade. Investigators say physical evidence and corroborating statements backed up the children’s accounts. One child told authorities, “I can’t go back to that home,” while another said, “Mom hits us and Gale lets her.” Both suspects are currently out on bond, and Erica Sayre’s preliminary hearing is set for November 20th.

For parents and neighbors, the case is a hard reminder that severe abuse can stay hidden behind closed doors for years.
