Due to the Pandemic the IRS pushed the filing deadline for 2020 tax returns to today, Monday, May 17. This past March the government adjusted the date for individual returns giving most taxpayers an extra month to file.

If you fail to file, you could miss out on refund money and potentially accrue penalties and interest if you owe the IRS. The agency said if needed you may file for an extension. To file for an extension you must submit form 4868. If you do need to file the 4858 form you will have until October 15th to file your taxes.

But that doesn’t mean you’re off the hook if you owe the IRS β€” the deadline for payment is May 17, whether you filed an extension or not. To avoid a penalty, you generally must pay at least 90% of what you owe to the IRS by today.
