Bicyclist Killed in Arcadia

In Arcadia on Thursday night, a 40-year-old man cycling lost his life after being struck by a van, as reported by the Florida Highway Patrol on Friday.

The incident occurred at 7:18 p.m. on Thursday at the intersection of U.S. Highway 17 and Southwest Skates Street, according to the report.

The van, driven by a 43-year-old Okeechobee man, was traveling north in the inside lane of U.S. 17 and approaching Skates Street. Simultaneously, the 40-year-old Wauchula man was cycling in the same direction on the paved shoulder of U.S. 17.

The bicyclist unexpectedly entered the northbound traffic lane in front of the van, resulting in a collision. The front of the van struck both the bicycle and its rider.

The cyclist was declared dead at the scene, and the next-of-kin was notified, according to the report. Notably, the bicyclist was not wearing a helmet.

The Florida Highway Patrol refrained from disclosing the identities of the individuals involved in the crash.

As of Friday morning, the investigation into the incident was ongoing.
