Celebrations Across the Region in Honor of Martin Luther King Jr.
On Nov. 2, 1983, President Ronald Reagan signed a bill making the third Monday in January a federal holiday in observance of King’s legacy. The holiday was first observed three years later on Jan. 20, 1986.
This weekend, the nation and region will come together to remember and celebrate the legacy of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. The Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe is set to honor King’s contributions with a special event titled “Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.: Celebrating His Legacy in Spoken Word and Song” at the Sarasota Opera House on Sunday. The program, directed by WBTT founder/artistic director Nate Jacobs, will feature re-enactments of King’s speeches, accompanied by dance and songs. The role of King will be portrayed by Rev. Charles McKenzie, with the participation of WBTT’s performers and the Stage of Discovery youth training program.
Nate Jacobs expressed the significance of honoring Dr. King’s leadership during the Civil Rights Movement, stating, “At WBTT, our mission is to promote and celebrate the African-American experience. Certainly, Dr. King’s leadership during the Civil Rights Movement is a major part of that experience. We are proud to honor his contributions to creating a more just society for all Americans today even as the fight continues to achieve that goal.”
