Counterfeit Money Leads to Arrests in DeSoto County Investigation

The DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office has announced the arrest of two North Port residents following an investigation into counterfeit money used at the Arcadia Walmart.

A few weeks ago, deputies responded to the store after a couple reportedly used fake currency to purchase Halloween decorations, candles, and a warmer totaling $175.06. Surveillance footage was obtained, and the case was turned over to the Criminal Investigative Division for further review.

Detective Grace was able to identify the suspects as Todd and Brenda Besson of North Port. The detective located their vehicle and later interviewed the pair at their home, where they admitted knowing about the counterfeit money.

Arrest warrants were issued, and since the suspects lived outside DeSoto County, the North Port Police Department assisted in taking them into custody. The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office also helped with evidence collection.

Sheriff Potter praised the collaboration between agencies and the persistence of investigators, emphasizing that those who commit crimes in DeSoto County will be held accountable.
