DeSoto County Officials Urge Residents to Prepare as Hurricane Season Begins

ARCADIA, Fla. — June 1 marks the official start of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, and DeSoto County officials are urging residents to take proactive steps now to ensure they’re ready for whatever the coming months may bring.

The DeSoto County Emergency Management team has launched its seasonal preparedness campaign with a special emphasis on helping vulnerable residents. Those with medical conditions, mobility challenges, or other special needs are strongly encouraged to register in advance for assistance in the event of a hurricane or other emergency.

Early registration for the Special Needs Registry is now open. This confidential program helps emergency responders better plan for and assist individuals who may require extra help during evacuations or sheltering. Residents can register online at: https://snr.flhealthresponse.com

“Preparedness is key,” said DeSoto County Emergency Management Director, [Insert Name if available]. “We especially want to make sure that residents with special needs are accounted for before a storm ever forms. The more information we have ahead of time, the better we can respond when seconds count.”

In addition to the Special Needs Registry, the county has compiled a comprehensive set of resources to help all residents get ready for hurricane season. The website — www.desotobocc.com/prepare — includes evacuation routes, shelter locations, emergency supply checklists, and tips for preparing homes and businesses.

Officials are also encouraging residents to:

  • Review their emergency plans with family members

  • Assemble hurricane supply kits with food, water, medications, and important documents

  • Check on neighbors, especially the elderly or disabled

  • Sign up for emergency alerts and weather notifications

The 2025 hurricane season is forecast to be active, with meteorologists predicting several named storms. DeSoto County wants its residents to take action now—before any storm threatens Southwest Florida.
