Driver Of Fatal Crash In Custody

ARCADIA —Kiara Rishelle Morant, 18, the woman accused of killing a child with her SUV, is being held on no bond at DeSoto County Jail.  She is being charged with driving without a drivers license and causing death and serious injury with a motor vehicle.
Authorities say Morant was driving the SUV that jumped the curb on East Magnolia Street in Arcadia on March 16.
The SUV she was driving jumped the curb and smashed through the fence at the Imagination Station playground on March 16th striking two girls, killing one.
Maleena Faith Valdez, 4 died of her injuries. The other girl an unidentified 5 year old was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries.
Bond was intitially set for Morant which drew outrage from local residents. A  new warrant was issued for her arrest and Morant turned herself in to Lee County Sheriff’s Office before being transferred to DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office.
Morant is scheduled for arraignment in DeSoto County Court on April 25.
