Florida Kicks Off Hurricane Preparedness Week Amid Forecast of Active Storm Season
May 5, 2025 | Tallahassee, FL — As Florida braces for what meteorologists predict could be one of the most active hurricane seasons in recent years, officials are launching Hurricane Preparedness Week with a strong call to action for residents across the state.
Governor Maria Ellis and the Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM) held a press conference Monday morning to mark the start of the annual awareness campaign, urging Floridians to review their emergency plans, restock hurricane kits, and stay informed.
“This week isn’t just a reminder—it’s a call to prepare,” said Ellis. “We know hurricanes are part of life in Florida, but with the right planning, we can reduce risks and save lives.”
The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season officially begins on June 1, and early forecasts from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) project a higher-than-average number of storms, due in part to warm ocean temperatures and favorable atmospheric conditions.
Key Themes and Tips
Each day of Hurricane Preparedness Week will focus on a specific topic, including:
Understanding hurricane hazards: Wind, storm surge, flooding, and tornadoes
Creating a family emergency plan
Assembling a disaster supply kit
Checking insurance coverage
Knowing evacuation routes and shelter locations
Strengthening home structures
Helping neighbors and vulnerable populations
The FDEM has launched a digital campaign to help residents access checklists, local resources, and evacuation zone maps. Residents can visit FloridaDisaster.org for daily updates and preparation guides in English, Spanish, and Haitian Creole.
Special Focus on Vulnerable Communities
This year, state agencies are placing special emphasis on reaching seniors, individuals with disabilities, and non-English-speaking communities. Local emergency managers are working with community leaders to distribute information through schools, churches, and neighborhood associations.
“We can’t leave anyone behind,” said FDEM Director Jason Reynolds. “Preparedness needs to be personal and inclusive.”
Sales Tax Holiday Reminder
To support preparation efforts, Florida’s annual Disaster Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday will begin May 25 and run through June 7. Items like batteries, flashlights, tarps, pet supplies, and portable generators will be exempt from sales tax.
Looking Ahead
Officials encourage residents to sign up for emergency alerts, follow local government social media accounts, and take part in community preparedness events throughout the week.
“This week is the perfect opportunity to get ready,” said Gov. Ellis. “Because once a storm is headed your way, it’s already too late to start planning.”
