Florida Residents Encouraged to Join Free Virtual Hurricane Preparedness Training

With the peak of hurricane season approaching, meteorologists from the National Weather Service (NWS) across Florida are joining forces to help residents get storm-ready. Through a series of virtual training sessions, the NWS aims to educate the public on tropical weather forecast tools, how to interpret them, and what actions to take before, during, and after a storm.

What’s the Goal?
The initiative is focused on teaching Floridians how to prepare, respond, and recover from tropical weather events. Meteorologists will walk participants through real forecast products, explain their meanings, and provide actionable guidance for making informed safety decisions.

Who Should Attend?
Everyone is welcome to attend these free sessions—no matter your age or where you are in life. While the training is designed with Florida residents in mind and includes guidance from the Florida Division of Emergency Management, the information is also valuable to anyone living in hurricane-prone areas.

How It Works:

  • Four-Day Series: Each day covers a new topic:

    • Day 1: Seasonal Readiness & Monitoring the Tropics

    • Day 2: Get Ready for Potential Impacts

    • Day 3: Sheltering & Hunker Down Mode

    • Day 4: Post-Storm Safety & Lessons Learned

  • Daily Session Times:

    • 11:00 AM EDT (10:00 AM CDT)

    • 1:00 PM EDT (12:00 PM CDT)

    • 7:00 PM EDT (6:00 PM CDT)

Each session lasts approximately one hour. Participants can interact with NWS meteorologists through chat and submit questions via a Google Form. All attendees will be muted during the presentation to manage the large participant volume—up to 1,000 registrants per session.
