New Laws Go Into Effect July 1, 2024

Gov. Ron DeSantis has been actively signing numerous bills passed during this year’s legislative session in recent months.

Starting Monday, over 150 bills signed by the governor will come into effect.

One highly debated measure, the law prohibiting children under 14 in Florida from having social media accounts, is scheduled to take effect on Jan. 1, 2025.

Highlighted below are some of the significant laws taking effect on July 1st:

Education

  • HB 931: Allows volunteer school chaplains with background checks and public disclosure.
  • SB 1264: Requires teaching communism history in schools by 2026-2027.
  • HB 1291: Bars “identity politics” from teacher-prep programs.

Property Laws

  • HB 1021 (“Condo 3.0”): Enhances condo owners’ rights and transparency.
  • HB 1503: Allows non-homesteaded properties in Citizens Insurance.

Nature & Climate

  • HB 87: Protects shooters defending against bears but imposes reporting requirements.
  • HB 1645: Reduces focus on climate change, restricts wind turbines, and promotes natural gas.

Parenting Laws

  • HB 385: Courts can mandate safe exchange locations for child custody.
  • HB 415: Launches a state website on pregnancy and parenting.
  • HB 461: Exempts new moms from jury duty for six months post-birth.

Teens & Young Adults

  • HB 49: Eases work-hour limits for 16- and 17-year-olds.
  • HB 7063: Bans minors from adult entertainment roles, targets human trafficking.
