October Marks Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Southwest Florida

CHARLOTTE & SARASOTA COUNTIES, Fla. – October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time to honor survivors, remember victims, and raise awareness about local resources for those affected by abuse.

In Charlotte County, the C.A.R.E. Victim Services Center continues its mission to provide safety, support, and empowerment for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and other violent crimes. The organization offers a 24-hour hotline, emergency shelter, counseling, and advocacy for individuals and families in crisis. The Charlotte County Clerk of Court’s Office is also marking the month by displaying purple ribbons at the Justice Center and reminding residents that help is available through injunctions for protection and other legal services.

According to the Health Planning Council of Southwest Florida, Charlotte County has averaged more than 300 domestic violence cases per 100,000 residents in recent years.

In Sarasota County, the Safe Place and Rape Crisis Center (SPARCC) is leading community outreach and educational events throughout October. Local organizations and civic groups are also holding fundraisers and donation drives to support survivors and raise awareness about prevention.

Residents across the Suncoast are encouraged to wear purple this month to show solidarity with victims and survivors of domestic violence.
