One Injured, One Arrested After Argument at Port Charlotte Homeless Camp

PORT CHARLOTTE — December 22, 2025 — A woman was arrested after a man was injured during an argument at a homeless camp in Port Charlotte, according to the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded just after noon on December 21 to the area of Kenesaw Street and Cedarwood Street following reports of a physical altercation. Upon arrival, deputies found a man suffering from a severe cut to his left forearm. The wound was approximately three inches long and half an inch deep. A tourniquet was applied by a deputy to control the bleeding until EMS arrived and transported the victim for medical treatment.

The victim told deputies he had argued with a woman, later identified as Stephanie A. Hernandez, 40, who he said had started a fire near his campsite the night before. When Hernandez returned to his campsite the following day, the victim told her to leave, which led to an argument. The victim reported Hernandez then picked up a knife and slashed his arm.

Deputies located Hernandez near her tent about 100 feet from the scene. While being escorted from the area, the victim positively identified her as the suspect.

Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Prummell said tensions can be heightened this time of year but emphasized that violence is never acceptable.

“Arguments happen, but how you handle those moments is part of what defines you,” Prummell said.

Hernandez was taken into custody. Charges were not immediately released.
