PORT CHARLOTTE MAN LEAVES SCENE OF ACCIDENT

A PORT CHARLOTTE MAN WAS ARRESTED AFTER HE REPORTEDLY LEFT THE SCENE OF AN ACCIDENT HE CAUSED.  CHARLOTTE COUNTY DEPUTIES SAY THEY RECEIVED A CALL AROUND 9:15PM TUESDAY THAT A MOTORIST DROVE OFF THE ROADWAY NEAR ELKHAM BOULEVARD AND INDIANA AVENUE AFTER HITTING SEVERAL MAILBOXES AND TRAFFIC SIGNS ON AARON AND EAST STREETS AND PERCY AVENUE.  THE DEPUTY WHO ARRIVED ON SCENE FOUND AN ABANDONED TAN MERCURY SABLE, AND A WITNESS TOLD HIM HE SAW THE DRIVER LEAVE THE SCENE ON FOOT.  DEPUTIES RECEIVED ANOTHER CALL A SHORT TIME LATER SAYING THE MAN, 44 YEAR OLD CRAIG SCHULER, WAS AT A HOME ON CASCADE AVENUE.  DEPUTIES FOUND SCHULER IN THE HOME, WEARING ONLY HIS UNDERWEAR.  THE REPORT SAYS HE APPEARED VERY NERVOUS AND WAS SWEATING.  THE WITNESS WAS BROUGHT TO THE HOME AND IDENTIFIED SCHULER, WHO WAS ARRESTED AND CHARGED WITH LEAVING THE SCENE OF AN ACCIDENT INVOLVING PROPERTY DAMAGE.  HE POSTED BOND AND WAS RELEASED FROM THE CHARLOTTE COUNTY JAIL.
