Punta Gorda City Council Approves ICE Partnership

Punta Gorda’s City Council has unanimously approved a partnership between the local police department and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), allowing for increased collaboration in removing undocumented immigrants. The decision has stirred strong reactions within the community.

Maria Lara, president of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), voiced opposition. Others commended the professionalism of local law enforcement while expressing concerns about the partnership’s implications.

The council’s decision follows a failed vote on a similar agreement in Fort Myers. However, Vice Mayor Greg Julian emphasized that Punta Gorda’s choice was independent.

Police Chief Pam Smith supported the agreement, assuring the community that the focus is on public safety without the intention of conducting raids or entering schools.

While the city attorney advised against the memorandum, the council remained resolute. After the meeting, the city attorney declined to comment further.
