Punta Gorda City Council to Vote on ICE Training Agreement for Police Officers
PUNTA GORDA, Fla. — On Wednesday, the Punta Gorda City Council will decide whether to approve an agreement allowing select police officers to receive training from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The proposal is part of ongoing immigration enforcement efforts and follows a similar measure in Fort Myers, which was rejected in a 3-3 council vote. Despite the setback, Fort Myers Mayor Kevin Anderson has suggested revisiting the decision before April.
Florida’s Attorney General has also weighed in, warning that rejecting the agreement could result in Fort Myers being labeled a sanctuary city.
The Punta Gorda City Council meeting begins at 9 a.m., with Gulf Coast News providing updates on the outcome.
