Sergeant Elio Diaz Services
It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Prummell announces the passing of Sergeant Elio Diaz. He was killed in the line of duty on Sunday, December 15, 2024 after a routine traffic stop in Charlotte Harbor, during which the driver opened fire, striking Sgt. Diaz. The shooter was later located and shot by responding deputies when he reached for his rifle again, succumbing to his wounds.
In honor of Sergeant Diaz, a memorial service will be held on Friday, December 20th, at 10 a.m. at Babcock Ranch Field House, 43281 Cypress Parkway, Punta Gorda, FL. 33982. The service will be open to the public and will also be live-streamed for those who are unable to attend in person. Look to CCSO social media accounts for a virtual link that will be provided. There will be a designated area for media who are attending the service.
Law Enforcement Honors will be presented directly following the service, with procession to Sgt. Diaz’s final resting place at Charlotte Memorial Gardens. Burial will be private to the family, CCSO members, and dignitaries. (Once I have the procession route details, I will share those as well.)
We appreciate the outpouring of love and support from the community and our fellow law enforcement agencies, locally and beyond. Cards may be sent to Sheriff Prummell or the Diaz family at 7474 Utilities Road, Punta Gorda, FL 33982.
