Southwest Florida Communities to Honor 9/11 With Remembrance Ceremonies

This Thursday marks the 24th anniversary of the September 11th attacks, and communities across Charlotte, Sarasota, and DeSoto counties will pause to remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost and the countless others forever changed. Ceremonies in North Port, Englewood, Venice, Sarasota, and Arcadia will bring together residents, first responders, and civic leaders in a day of solemn reflection.
In North Port, Fire Rescue will lead a Patriot Day Ceremony at 9:15 a.m. in front of City Hall, 4970 City Hall Boulevard. The service will honor the sacrifices of first responders and civilians who perished on 9/11.
Englewood’s Veterans Plaza on West Dearborn Street will host a memorial ceremony beginning at 9:30 a.m. and continuing through 1:00 p.m. Organized by the Englewood Chamber, the Englewood Fire Department, Operation Solid 7, and VFW Post 10178, the event will feature remarks, a moment of silence, and a remembrance display.
In Venice, the City will hold its official 24th Anniversary 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony at 9:59 a.m. at Patriots Park, 800 Venetia Bay Boulevard. Local leaders will gather with residents to honor the moment the South Tower of the World Trade Center fell, symbolizing the day’s profound loss.
Sarasota will host multiple tributes. The Sarasota County Fire Department will hold a commemoration at its Emergency Services Administration, 6062 Porter Way, from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m., with a brief ceremony and moment of silence. Earlier in the day, the USF Sarasota–Manatee campus will begin its remembrance at 8:15 a.m. with a flag raising and taps at the campus entrance, followed by a formal program at 8:30 a.m. in the Student Center Ballroom.
In Arcadia, DeSoto County Fire Rescue will lead a remembrance ceremony on the courthouse lawn at 115 E Oak Street at 9:00 a.m., inviting the community to join in reflection.
While neighboring communities prepare for their tributes, Punta Gorda has not announced a public event for this year, though past observances have been held at the Military Heritage Museum.
As the anniversary approaches, these gatherings across Southwest Florida offer residents the opportunity to come together, honor the fallen, and reaffirm a promise never to forget the events of September 11, 2001.
