Hardee County, Florida – In a proactive effort to combat the menace of mosquitoes and the diseases they carry, Hardee County is hosting Tire Amnesty Day 2024 in collaboration with the Hardee County Department of Health. The event aims to reduce the mosquito population by providing residents with a means to dispose of old tires safely and free of charge.
Scheduled for Saturday, February 17, from 8 a.m. to noon, Tire Amnesty Day will take place at the Hardee County Landfill located at 685 Airport Road in Wauchula. The initiative encourages residents to participate in the disposal of old tires to help eliminate breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
With the slogan “Fight the Bite,” the campaign underscores the importance of community action in reducing the spread of mosquito-borne illnesses. By removing stagnant water sources where mosquitoes breed, such as discarded tires, residents can play a vital role in protecting public health.
Residents are urged to take advantage of this opportunity, with a limit of 25 tires per individual being accepted free of charge. However, commercial loads will not be accepted at the event. To ensure fairness and compliance with regulations, participants must present a photo ID as proof of residency before disposing of tires.
According to Florida HEALTH Hardee County, the initiative aligns with state regulations governing waste tire disposal. Individuals in Florida are permitted to transport up to 25 waste tires without registration. However, those transporting more than 25 tires at a time on Florida roadways must be registered with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) as a waste tire collector.
