On July 10th, a five-year-old boy walked into the middle of a Pennsylvania road, naked and alone. Good Samaritans found him, stayed with him, and called police. What investigators discovered when they reached the home he’d escaped from shocked even seasoned law enforcement: a child’s bedroom sealed shut with wooden boards and a baby gate held closed by multiple zip ties and duct tape. The child had spent roughly 90 percent of his day locked in that room, sometimes for up to three days without being let out. The entire house was in severe hoarding conditions, with trash, hundreds of flies, and minimal livable space.
Three adults—Jade Shuey (21), Tucker Heagy (20), and Stephanie Schaffner (42)—were arrested and charged with endangering the welfare of children. All three remain in Lebanon County Prison without bail. This case raises critical questions about our communities’ responsibility to vulnerable children and how we can recognize dangerous situations before they reach this level of severity.
