On Wednesday, a St. Louis baby’s fate came down to one person’s decision to stop and help. Christopher Pearson, 36, left an infant in a car seat on Goodfellow Avenue near Natural Bridge. When the baby’s mother called asking where her child was, Pearson claimed he’d left the child outside a police station. It was a lie. A witness who spotted the car seat moved it from traffic and discovered the baby inside, likely preventing a tragedy that could have unfolded in minutes.
Pearson’s poor choices didn’t end there. When police arrived in the area, he fled in his vehicle, leading officers on a dangerous pursuit through residential neighborhoods. During the chase, he drove recklessly through yards and fences, nearly collided with other vehicles, and threw a gun from his car. Officers eventually caught him when his vehicle hit a dead end, and two additional firearms were found in the car. In total, three guns were recovered from the scene.
Now facing first-degree endangering the welfare of a child and resisting arrest charges, Pearson is being held without bond at St. Louis City Justice Center. This case illustrates both the fragility of child safety and the power of community vigilance. One person paying attention and acting on it made all the difference. What would you have done if you’d spotted that car seat?
