A Tampa woman is facing some of the most serious charges possible after the death of a 3-year-old girl in her care. Grace Wingate, 29, was arrested on July 16 for the child’s death on April 25. The child was brought to Brandon Regional Hospital with multiple injuries sustained while under Wingate’s care, and the medical examiner determined the death was a homicide. Wingate is charged with first-degree murder while engaged in aggravated child abuse, child neglect with great bodily harm, and aggravated child abuse.
One aspect of this case that’s drawing attention is the three-month gap between the child’s death and the arrest. Investigators needed time to gather evidence, interview witnesses, and build their case. The charges reflect what detectives and prosecutors believe happened, but the legal process is just beginning. Wingate is being held without bond at the Hillsborough County Jail while the investigation continues.
