Da’Jon Anthony Hayes-Burr was just 15 years old, but he already had the kind of courage most adults hope they’d find if the moment ever came. In April, he saw a 45-year-old man harassing 12-year-old Bristol Staisel. Without hesitating, Da’Jon stepped in to protect her. He was stabbed for his bravery. The community recognized his heroism — the Louisville Metro Council honored him, and Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear sent him a personal letter of gratitude.
Tragically, on July 25th, Da’Jon was shot and killed in Louisville. Police have arrested a 14-year-old boy and charged him with murder. Governor Beshear expressed his grief, saying no parent should have to endure this pain. The same young man who was celebrated for saving a life has now lost his own in a senseless act of violence. It’s a heartbreaking turn that has left his family, his community, and the girl he saved searching for answers.
This story hits home for anyone with kids, grandkids, or just a belief that goodness should be rewarded. A hero shouldn’t end up as a statistic.
