A Georgia woman is facing kidnapping and cruelty charges after police say she posed as a babysitter in a Facebook pregnancy group to target a family. Lakesha Brown, 42, allegedly spent a year building a relationship with the children’s mother before taking 11-month-old Norah and 4-year-old Zola on Saturday night. The girls were found Monday locked inside a tow trailer without air conditioning. Officers used bolt cutters to break them free, and body camera footage captured the rescue. Authorities also discovered Brown had a 2021 Alabama warrant for kidnapping a 4-day-old baby.
For parents here on the Suncoast, this story raises hard questions about how we find childcare. Facebook mom groups are built on trust and shared experience, which is exactly why they can be attractive to bad actors. Experts recommend verifying any potential caregiver with a formal background check, asking for multiple references, and meeting in public spaces first. Trust your instincts. If something feels off, it probably is.
The good news: both girls are safe and reunited with their family. The suspect is in custody. But this is a conversation worth having with your partner, your friends, and your neighbors. Have you ever hired a babysitter through social media? What steps did you take to feel confident in your choice? Share your thoughts in the comments.
