Sarasota County Schools received some unwelcome news this week. A $7.5 million grant intended for a trades academy at Suncoast Technical College’s North Port campus has been revoked. The district had requested revisions after discovering that nearly half of the grant, roughly $3.7 million, would have gone toward compliance costs rather than the academy itself. Officials believed the project could proceed under the original approved agreement if revisions were denied. Instead, the funding was revoked entirely. Superintendent Connor expressed disappointment, noting the district was not given the opportunity to continue under the original terms before the money was pulled.
