A Lancaster County, Pennsylvania mother is facing involuntary manslaughter and child endangerment charges after her 5-month-old daughter drowned in a hotel spa tub earlier this year. According to investigators, 25-year-old Diontae Nicole Beckett had been drinking throughout the day on May 11 and recorded a blood alcohol content of 0.149% on a breath test, well above Pennsylvania’s legal driving limit. Police say hotel surveillance video shows her carrying the baby into the lobby, the child appearing lifeless, before other guests called 911.
Court records describe a detail that has stayed with many who followed the case: investigators say they found photos and video on Beckett’s phone of the infant in the spa tub. According to authorities, Beckett told them she didn’t realize she had taken her daughter into the water. She posted $100,000 bail and waived her preliminary hearing on August 26. As with any criminal case, these are allegations, and Beckett is presumed innocent unless and until a court finds otherwise.
