Keith Rahn has spent nine years behind the wheel, and last month the trucking industry handed him his third Highway Angel award. The honor came after an August stop near Salt Lake City, where Rahn pulled in to walk his dog and heard an argument turn violent. A man hit a woman, and Rahn stepped in. He made sure the man left and got the woman to safety.
The Highway Angel award exists for exactly this kind of moment. It’s given by the trucking industry to drivers who help people in need, often when no one else will. For Rahn, though, the recognition isn’t the point. “I don’t classify it as being heroic,” he said. “It’s things that we as people need to do to look out for each other.”
That mindset feels familiar here on the Suncoast. We check on neighbors after storms, we look out for each other at the beach and around the block. Rahn just carried that same instinct onto the road. Three awards, zero interest in the spotlight, and a reminder that courage usually looks like an ordinary person deciding to act.
