Nathan Benderson Park 9/11 Stair Climb Honors Heroes and Highlights Mental Health Support

Sarasota’s Nathan Benderson Park turned its six-story finish tower into a tribute Friday morning. From 8 a.m. to noon, community members climbed 17 trips up and down the north and south stairwells for the free 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb and Day of Remembrance. Those 17 trips match the 110 stories firefighters scaled inside the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Participants moved at their own pace, no timer, no pressure, just a shared purpose.

The crowd included first responders, active-duty service members, veterans, and plenty of everyday Suncoast neighbors, along with a Suncoast View reporter who climbed right alongside them. Beyond the stairwells, organizers kept a second mission front and center: mental health. Lakewood Ranch Medical Center’s virtual Talkspace program was highlighted as an available resource, a fitting focus during National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month.

Whether you climbed, volunteered, or simply paused to remember, the morning offered a local way to honor the 2,977 lives lost and the first responders who ran toward danger. It also served as a reminder that the people who serve our communities often carry invisible weight long after the uniform comes off.
