President Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday that he uses artificial intelligence “for a lot of things,” but declined to offer any specifics. He also said the U.S. is leading in AI development by a wide margin and predicted the technology will bring more benefit than harm. The comments came just one day after Dario Amodei, CEO of AI company Anthropic, warned that AI agents could take over the internet within six months to a year if companies don’t invest more heavily in safeguards.
The contrast between the two messages is hard to miss. Two former Anthropic safety researchers also went public saying existential risks from AI aren’t getting enough attention, and one former employee said the people building the technology earnestly believe it could kill us all by the end of the decade. Trump has generally downplayed the need for heavy regulation but acknowledged some oversight is necessary.
