A Punta Gorda man was arrested September 16 after authorities received a tip about a video showing him abusing a 6-week-old puppy. Neil R. Puterbaugh, 53, now faces felony charges of aggravated animal cruelty and violation of probation. According to the Suncoast News Network, the tip came in on September 13, and when deputies searched his home, they reportedly found additional videos of abuse.
The case has struck a nerve in a region where pets are part of daily life, from the dog-friendly beaches of Venice to the walking trails around Sarasota. Animal cruelty cases tend to draw strong community reaction, and this one is no exception, especially given the age of the puppy and the fact that the suspect was already under court supervision at the time of the alleged offense.
