A 23-year-old social media creator with more than 423,000 TikTok followers and nearly 150,000 on Instagram was arrested Sept. 10 in South Carolina on five counts of third-degree sexual exploitation of a minor and one count of criminal solicitation of a minor. The state attorney general’s office says Carson Dean Barry solicited a minor for sex and possessed child sexual abuse material. Investigators seized a computer tower and two iPhones from his home, and authorities allege a 12-second video found on one phone showed a toddler being sexually assaulted.
The investigation began with a tip submitted to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, the same reporting network that has helped launch countless cases nationwide. Jail records show Barry’s bond was set at $1 million, and he was released shortly after midnight on Sept. 13. He is presumed innocent unless and until the case is resolved in court.
For families here on the Suncoast, the story raises a practical question that has nothing to do with one individual: how closely do we actually monitor the creators our kids follow? Audiences that large don’t grow by accident, and young viewers in Sarasota, Bradenton and Venice are part of them.
