A 7-month-old Charlotte boy, Julien Grayson, died Wednesday from severe head injuries suffered while in his babysitter’s care. Shidae Sellers, 28, told police the baby was not feeling well and fell off the couch. Medical staff confirmed his injuries did not match that account. Julien had skull fractures and torn nerve fibers in his brain, injuries typically caused by rapid movement or forceful impact.
Sellers was arrested Sept. 10 on a charge of child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury. After Julien died, the charge was upgraded to first-degree murder. She remains in custody at the Mecklenburg County jail and was scheduled for a Friday morning court appearance. According to the affidavit, Julien had been in Sellers’ care since Sept. 7, and she called his mother to meet at the hospital on Sept. 9.
Julien’s mother reported the situation to the Department of Social Services, a step that moved the investigation forward.
