Bankrate: 9 in 10 Suncoast Homeowners Overpay on Their Mortgage by $3,300 a Year

If you own a home in Sarasota, Manatee, or Charlotte County, there’s a good chance you’re paying more for your mortgage than you need to. A new Bankrate analysis found that nine in 10 homeowners never shopped around for a better rate, and that the typical U.S. home buyer overpays by more than $3,300 a year. Over the life of a 30-year fixed mortgage, that adds up to more than $78,000 in avoidable cost.

Bankrate analyst Alex Gailey calls it a “hidden homeownership tax,” because it quietly drains money that could otherwise build wealth. For Suncoast households already juggling property insurance, taxes, and storm season costs, it’s one of the few line items where buyers still hold real leverage. The fix comes down to comparison shopping: get quotes from several lenders on the same day, ask for itemized line-by-line estimates so fees can’t hide, and set a walk-away rate before you start touring homes.

Whether you’re a first-time buyer in North Port, a snowbird downsizing near the beach, or a longtime owner weighing a refinance, the same rule applies. A few hours of legwork upfront can save you tens of thousands over the life of the loan. The lenders expect you to shop around. The question is whether you will.
