A man was shot and killed early Monday morning in Kansas City, Kansas, and during the same gunfire, a USD 500 school bus carrying students was struck by a stray bullet. Investigators say officers responded around 6:39 a.m. to North 18th Street and Longwood Avenue, where they found the victim with gunshot wounds. He died at the scene. No students on the bus were injured, and as of Monday morning, police had no suspects in custody. The KCK Police Major Case Unit has taken over the homicide investigation.
For families here on the Suncoast, the details are a stark reminder of how quickly a normal school morning can turn into something else entirely. School buses are one of the few places where parents and grandparents genuinely hand over control, trusting that the route from the driveway to the school door is uneventful. Monday’s shooting turned a Kansas City bus into part of a crime scene, and though the students walked away unharmed, the randomness of it is hard to shake.
