The Suncoast’s ice sports scene is about to get a lot more room to skate. Ellenton Ice and Sports Complex is moving forward with a $7 million renovation that adds a third sheet of ice along with an NHL-level training facility, according to owner Matt Smith. The project has been in the works for eight months, with planning that covers every square foot of the building. The new rink could open as early as August 2027, with full completion expected in 2028.
The timing matters. Manatee County ended negotiations on September 1 for Project Grace, a proposed ice complex in Lakewood Ranch, after concerns from residents and county commissioners. With that proposal off the table, Ellenton becomes the region’s clear hub for hockey and figure skating. Smith’s vision is straightforward: Ellenton Ice can be a world-class facility in the heart of Manatee County, and the growth of local youth programs suggests the demand is already there.
For families who have been driving to Tampa or juggling scarce practice slots, the expansion means more ice time, more training options, and shorter commutes. It’s also a notable economic development story for the area, with a seven-figure investment and a facility designed to attract serious athletic talent.
