A welfare check in Spartanburg County, South Carolina turned into a criminal investigation Saturday after deputies found two young children with knife wounds inside a home on Bud Arthur Bridge Road. Their mother, 35-year-old Taylor Gosnell, has been charged with attempted murder. Investigators say she attacked the children, ages 3 and 6, with a knife and a blunt object, and that televisions and mirrors throughout the home were shattered.
Both children were taken to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center and are expected to recover, though the 6-year-old suffered severe damage to one arm that may require amputation. Gosnell was taken for a mental health evaluation, attempted to flee the ambulance, and was later denied bond. The 7th Circuit Solicitor’s Office released details on the injuries, and the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office says the investigation remains active.
For families across the Suncoast, this story raises uncomfortable questions about mental health intervention and how communities respond when someone is clearly struggling. Warning signs rarely announce themselves, and the people closest to a crisis are often the least sure what to do with what they’re seeing.
