Sept. 29 is Hunger Action Day, and All Faiths Food Bank is asking the Suncoast to play its part during Hunger Action Month. The need is closer than most of us assume. Food insecurity affects about 13% of Sarasota County residents and 21% of those in DeSoto County, with children facing even steeper rates, over 19% and nearly 30% respectively.
The economics explain a lot. A family of four in Sarasota needs nearly $109,000 a year to cover basic needs like housing, food and childcare, while the county’s median household income is roughly $83,000. That gap doesn’t show up in a paycheck stub, but it shows up at the grocery store. In 2025, more than 83,000 neighbors sought help from All Faiths, and the organization and its partners provided nearly 19 million meals, including 5.8 million pounds of fresh produce, through 870 distributions.
One number worth watching: SNAP applications fell from 1,439 to 1,110 between January and August compared to last year, and approvals dropped even more. Fewer applications during a time of persistent need often signals that people are giving up on the process, not that hunger is fading.
