Automatic payments from Amazon’s $2.5 billion settlement with the Federal Trade Commission began rolling out Thursday, and if you’re seeing an unexpected deposit in your PayPal or Venmo, that’s likely why. The FTC expanded eligibility for this round to include millions of people who used between 11 and 20 Prime benefits over a one-year period, a much wider group than the original pool of low-use subscribers. Individual payments can reach up to $200, and there are no claim forms or phone calls required to receive one.
Payments arrive through PayPal, Venmo, or a mailed check. If you already cashed an earlier settlement check, you may still be in line for a supplemental payment of up to $149 starting in April 2027. The settlement stems from FTC allegations that Amazon used deceptive enrollment and cancellation practices, and the agency’s Bureau of Consumer Protection says the revised order makes sure more of the consumers who were harmed actually benefit.
One thing to keep on your radar here on the Suncoast: scammers are already using this news to impersonate the FTC and ask for bank details or fees to “release” a refund. The real process is automatic. No agency will ever call or email you asking for money or financial information to deliver this payment.
