Florida Trooper Shoots Hit-and-Run Suspect in Orange County After Taser Fails: What We Know

SHARE NOW

A Florida Highway Patrol trooper shot and wounded a hit-and-run suspect Friday night in Orange County after the man fled the crash scene on foot and continued to resist arrest. According to investigators, the encounter happened around 9:24 p.m. on Lakeville Road, and the suspect kept fighting even after the trooper deployed his taser several times. The trooper then used his firearm, striking the man, who was taken into custody and hospitalized.

The trooper was not injured. As with any officer-involved shooting in Florida, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is conducting a standard use-of-force investigation. The suspect’s name and current condition have not been released, and no additional details about the crash that started it all have been made public.

For Suncoast residents, this story touches on issues that come up again and again: how quickly a routine traffic incident can escalate, whether tasers are dependable enough to serve as an officer’s main less-lethal option, and how much the public is entitled to know while an investigation is still open. We’ll keep following the FDLE review and any updates on the suspect’s condition.

What do you think: should law enforcement release a suspect’s name and condition sooner, even during an active investigation?
