Freddie Jackson, one of the most recognizable R&B voices of the 1980s, has died at 70. His official Instagram account announced the news Tuesday, saying he passed Monday. No cause of death was given. The post closed with a simple line: “Your legacy and your voice will live on forever.”

Jackson’s run in the mid-1980s produced some of the era’s most enduring R&B singles, including “Rock Me Tonight,” “You Are My Lady,” “Jam Tonight,” and “Have You Ever Loved Somebody.” Those songs stayed in heavy rotation on quiet storm radio for years, and they never really left. Around the Suncoast, they’re still staples at weddings, anniversary parties, and any night that calls for a slow dance.

Even if you didn’t own a Freddie Jackson record, you know his voice. It’s the one that came through the car speakers on a drive over the Skyway and the one that played at the end of a reception in Sarasota. That connection to a specific time and place is why his music matters to so many people in our community.
