Burlington police responded to multiple 911 calls about a fight just before 6 a.m. Saturday and arrived to find a woman unresponsive in bed with head injuries. She was pronounced dead Sunday evening. Her husband, 44-year-old Bal Khadka, is accused of bludgeoning her with a large flashlight, allegedly in front of three children. He was initially charged with attempted murder before the charge was upgraded to second-degree murder following her death. He is expected in court Tuesday, and the victim’s name has not been released.

The escalation from attempted murder to second-degree murder reflects how the legal system responds when a victim dies after an initial attack. For the community in Burlington, and for families everywhere, the presence of three child witnesses raises difficult questions about the long-term impact of exposure to domestic violence and the importance of intervention before situations reach a breaking point.

Domestic violence does not stay contained to one state or one neighborhood. Here on the Suncoast, local organizations offer confidential support, safety planning, and shelter for anyone in an unsafe situation at home. Reaching out does not require having a plan or making a decision about leaving; a single phone call is enough to start.

Have you ever helped a friend or neighbor who seemed to be in a difficult situation at home? What made the difference in that moment?
