Stray Bullet Kills Therapy Donkey in South Carolina, Hunter Charged

A hunter in Anderson County, South Carolina is facing charges after a missed shot at a deer ended the life of a pet donkey named Angelique. According to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, the round struck the animal at Hasty’s Haven, an animal rescue, over the weekend. The hunter has been charged with negligent use of a firearm and hunting within 300 yards of a residence.

Angelique wasn’t just a rescue animal. She and three members of her herd previously served as therapy animals for children with special needs. Joann Kelly, who founded Hasty’s Haven, said Angelique arrived several years ago along with the rest of her herd. “I just hope this doesn’t happen to anyone else,” Kelly said. “I hope that other hunters take note and be respectful.”

The case carries a message that resonates well beyond the Carolinas, especially for communities like ours here on the Suncoast where hunting land, homes, and neighborhoods sit close together. Wildlife officials are reminding hunters to positively identify their target and consider what lies beyond it before pulling the trigger. One missed shot doesn’t stop at the tree line.
