Two women from Oxford, Mississippi are facing charges after a child allegedly suffered burns to the feet at a Lafayette County daycare. The sheriff’s office received the report on September 22 and opened an investigation that led to the arrests of Rhina Delgado, 20, and a 17-year-old girl. Delgado is charged with misdemeanor child neglect, while the teenager faces three counts of felony child abuse.

Both appeared in court after their arrests. The 17-year-old received a $25,000 bond, and Delgado’s bond was set at $2,500. Authorities have not released additional details about the child’s condition or the circumstances leading up to the injuries, and the investigation remains active.

For families here on the Suncoast, the case is a reminder that childcare safety starts with the questions we ask. Who is supervising your child at any given moment? What training do they have? How does the facility handle and report incidents? Those conversations are worth having before anything goes wrong. What do you look for when choosing a daycare? Let us know on our Facebook page.
