A routine grocery run in Punta Gorda turned violent on the afternoon of Oct. 10, when police say a 70-year-old shopper was stabbed with a box cutter inside a Publix store. Officers responded shortly before 4 p.m. According to a probable-cause affidavit, the victim felt a sharp pain on the left side of his face while shopping, turned around, saw blood and spotted a man holding the box cutter before running toward customer service. The victim was treated at a Port Charlotte hospital for cuts to his face, neck and upper chest, and received stitches.

Forty-seven-year-old Ramsey Thomas Lyons was detained by officers near the store entrance. Surveillance video showed him walking through the store and leaving the aisle shortly after the victim fled, and a box cutter was recovered from that aisle, according to the affidavit. Lyons is charged with aggravated battery on a person 65 or older and was booked into the Charlotte County Jail. The charge reflects Florida’s enhanced penalties for battery against elderly victims, which is a first-degree felony in certain circumstances.

For a community that knows its grocery stores by aisle and its cashiers by name, an attack like this lands differently. It’s the kind of thing that makes the afternoon errand feel less ordinary, especially for retirees and older residents who make up so much of our Suncoast neighborhoods. No motive has been publicly detailed, and the investigation continues.
