A 70-year-old man was shopping at the Publix on Tamiami Trail in Punta Gorda on October 10th when he felt what he thought was a punch to his face. He turned and saw a man holding a box cutter. He was bleeding. The laceration ran four to six inches from his left cheek through his jawline and neck. He was treated at Fawcett Hospital in Port Charlotte and survived.

The suspect, Ramsey Thomas Lyons, was arrested at the scene without incident. According to the Punta Gorda Police Department, Lyons told officers after being read his Miranda rights that he entered the store intending to murder someone and picked the victim at random. He said the man looked like he was from the 1960s and that he wanted him to die. He also mentioned an undiagnosed mental illness and said he had been thinking about the attack for two days. Lyons is charged with one count of aggravated battery on a person 65 or older and is being held at the Charlotte County Jail.

This is the kind of story that makes you think about the places we treat as routine. The grocery store. The pharmacy. The bank. For a lot of us on the Suncoast, Publix is practically a second home. A random attack in that setting raises real questions about public safety, mental health resources, and what retail stores can realistically do to protect shoppers.

What would give you more peace of mind the next time you walk into a store? More visible security, or better mental health intervention before something like this happens?
